EDTC 6433 Week 1/Module 1 Reflection
Week 1 question: "What avenues of technology (besides Powerpoint can our 8th graders use when presenting their ideas on their final projects in music?"
As described by Bernard R. Robin (2008) in the article “Digital Storytelling- A Powerful
Technology Tool for the 21st Century Classroom”, digital storytelling “allows
computer users to become creative storytellers through the traditional processes
of selecting a topic, conducting some research, writing a script, and
developing an interesting story” (p. 222). In my 8th grade curriculum I see
this working well as both a method of instruction and an avenue for my students
to use in their final projects. My
current delivery is a lecture style, one that becomes dull after time. Digital storytelling accomplishes the goal of
ISTE 1, allowing a creative method of facilitating learning and providing
creative interaction with material. Likewise when the students use digital storytelling
on their final projects, they will be working creatively with technology to
facilitate their own learning.
ISTE 1 is focused on facilitating meaningful and creative interactions with technology that in turn inspire learning. Technology cannot simply be implemented for the sake of being implemented. Technology in the classroom needs to be used in a way that transforms learning. One way of checking if technology is being used to facilitate and inspire learning is through the “SAMR Model of Technology Integration”. As mentioned in the model, teachers should facilitate learning with the appropriate “level” on the ladder. If harnessed correctly with a clear purpose, technology provides creative, personal, and inspired learning opportunities.
In the end, I am happy with the results that I received the past two weeks. ISTE 1 ensures meaningful and creative interactions with technology that progress student learning. Digital storytelling fits this bill exactly and is something that I am eager to implement in my 8th grade music curriculum.

Bryan,
ReplyDeleteI am excited to continue to hear how this process works in your classroom. I am going to visit your resource provided above to see how to implement this process into my classroom. I like how you referenced the SAMR model for this post as well. This model seems to fit very easily into this ISTE standard. Have you looked at the Arizona Technology Integration Matrix?
